Nigel Westlake
Composer | Conductor
Nigel Westlake’s career, spanning almost 5 decades, began as a clarinettist touring Australia and the world with many orchestras, ensembles & bands. He began composing from 1980, receiving offers to write for radio, theatre, circus, TV and film and was appointed composer in residence for ABC Radio in 1984.
His film credits include Babe, Blueback, Ali’s Wedding, Paper Planes, Miss Potter, Babe- Pig in the City, Children of the Revolution, The Nugget, A Little Bit of Soul and the IMAX films Antarctica, Solarmax, The Edge and Imagine.
He writes extensively for the concert hall, receiving commissions to write for orchestras, ensembles and soloists and has received many awards, including two ARIA Awards, 15 APRA awards across both Classical and Screen categories, the 2022 APRA Distinguished Services to the Australian Screen Award and the Gold Medal for Best Original Music at the New York International Radio Festival.
He is a two time winner of the prestigious Paul Lowin Orchestral prize, in 2013 for Missa Solis – Requiem for Eli and in 2019 for Spirit of the Wild – Concerto for oboe and orchestra. His most recent work ‘A Symphonic Odyssey’ with Professor Brian Cox, was a sell out event when performed live at the Sydney opera House.
In 2020 he was awarded the Albert H. Maggs Composition Award by the University of Melbourne for his 3rd String quartet “Sacred Sky”.
Most recently, Nigel received an ARIA award for his outstanding soundtrack for the multi-award nominated and award-winning movie ‘BlueBack’. Nigel Westlake has conducted all the major symphony orchestras in Australia in performances and recordings of his own works.
Melissa Boulden
Music Teacher
Melissa is a busy Classroom Music Teacher (Years 5-12) at Penrith Anglican College which can be found at the foot of the Blue Mountains in Western Sydney, Australia. Melissa recently joined the Performing Arts department at PAC and is enjoying working with her new colleagues and students.
Looking for topics that were enjoyable and relatable for students. Melissa discovered Film music seems to always fascinate students. Melissa developed comprehensive classroom resources that trained and equipped students to complete the various elements of their High School Certificate Music Courses using Nigel Westlake’s score from Paper Planes.
Outside of work, Melissa loves being involved in praise and worship music at her local church and occasionally will jump into the orchestra pit (on flute) at a nearby amateur musical society.

As a music educator for over two decades, Heather has a wealth of experience and expertise in the classroom and beyond. She is particularly enthusiastic about video game music and was commissioned to create GameComposer for the MusicEDU Suite.
